Who is required to participate in MIPS?

MIPS eligible clinicians who bill for Medicare Part B (otherwise known as the Physician Fee Schedule) or Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Method II payments assigned to the CAH and meet the low volume threshold (LVT) include:

  • Physicians (including doctors of medicine, doctors of osteopathy [including osteopathic practitioners], doctors of dental surgery, doctors of dental medicine, doctors of podiatric medicine, doctors of optometry, and doctors of chiropractic)
  • Physician assistants
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Clinical nurse specialists
  • Certified registered nurse anesthetists
  • LCSW - new in 2022
  • Certified nurse mid-wives - new in 2022
  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Clinical psychologists
  • Qualified speech-language pathologists
  • Qualified audiologists
  • Registered dietitians or nutrition professionals

*Physician means doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy (including osteopathic practitioner), doctor of dental surgery, doctor of dental medicine, doctor of podiatric medicine, or doctor of optometry, and, with respect to certain specified treatment, a doctor of chiropractic legally authorized to practice by a State in which he/she performs this function.
